PhD Position Within Economics Analysis of Zero Emission Transport Systems and Value Chains
About the position
There is a temporary position available at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management as PhD candidate in industrial economics and technology management for a period of 3 years. The position is resident at NTNUs campus in Trondheim. Main duties and responsibilities
This PhD projects aims to study and analyze zero emission transport systems and value chains. This project focuses on the impact of introducing battery electric and hydrogen vessels and vehicles in the energy system in order to reduce the emissions from the Norwegian transport sector by 50% in 2030. The project focuses mainly on heavy duty freight, but also the relations to other transport services through infrastructure and fuels. The project will take a multimodal approach with the maritime sector, the railway sector, road transportation and aviation. The project will thus emphasize the role and potential of the shift of transportation modes and efficiency improvements for achieving these goals on sectoral and aggregated level, including links to energy, climate and industrial policy both at national and regional level. Relevant instruments like public purchasing, public, private cooperation, regulation and the impact of vehicle and fuel taxation is to be analyzed. The role that fuels like hydrogen, electricity and biofuels will play in future Norwegian transport systems is of high interest. The focus of the project is on economic analysis, but it will be linked to existing energy and transport models in MoZEES.
The work will be carried out in close cooperation with industry partners from the FME and other research within the project.
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in transportation economics and/or operations research/optimization or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.
The following qualifications are required for the position:
- A highly motivated candidate with a high-grade (minimum character B) Master's degree within economics and/or operations research or optimization.
- Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
In addition, the following qualifications will contribute positively to the evaluation of the applicant:
- Experience with modelling transport systems.
- Understanding of transport economics and empirical analyses.
- Experience with or formal education in economics.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is 3 years. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in industrial economics and technology management (www.ntnu.edu/studies/phiot).
As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.
Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
Primary residency in Trondheim is a prerequisite.
