Position Focus:

Within the Division of Cardiac Surgery, the Research Associate - 2 will be responsible for planning, tracking and ensuring that the clinical activities for study participants are conducted in accordance with approved protocols. These activities include, but are not limited to patient screening, eligibility determination, registration and other protocol and subject milestones. The Research Associate will have direct patient contact and will be responsible for managing multiple clinical studies and trials. The RA will be assigned individual research projects that they will be expected to lead, as well as collaborate with other Division researchers on larger research projects. The Research Associate is responsible for maintaining the adult cardiac surgery clinical research database, submitting and maintaining HIC protocols, coordinating data collection for the database, and developing additional databases to address specific project needs.

The Research Associate is responsible for scheduling and managing weekly research meetings, which include the discussion of new research projects, coordination of research work assigned, and progress reports on current projects. The Research Associate is also responsible for attending clinical meetings throughout the year, and will present findings from the Division’s research projects at the venues and encourage project collaborations with other institutions. The incumbent will also speak occasionally at conferences selected by the Division faculty and approved by the Division Chief.

Additionally, the Research Associate will publish approximately 1-2 peer-reviewed manuscripts bimonthly in collaboration with the Divisions faculty and parties related to the published work.

Essential Duties

  1. Carries out research within the scope of the established study protocol. Adheres to all human subjects regulations as defined by Yale University and the federal government that pertain to research studies.
  2. Develops criteria for admission of study subjects based on goals and objectives of project.
  3. Determines potential sources of funding and prospective partnerships.
  4. Evaluates feasibility of accepting potential projects through analysis of staffing needs, resource requirements, financial costs, and current planned capacity of group. Negotiates contracts and/or changes with funder.
  5. Develops original HIC/IRB submissions.  Based on knowledge of science and research goals, collaborates with PIs on major revisions and contributes to scientific protocols.  Plans and implements changes.
  6. Develops forms, questionnaires and the application of research techniques; writes procedures manuals for data collection and coding.
  7. Responsible for the documentation and transmission of study data. Ensures that report forms are accurately documented and completed in a timely manner at each site location.
  8. Works independently to develop manage and organize multi site studies. Serves as primary coordinator between University, non-Yale collaborators, pharmaceutical companies, HIC, IRB and funding sources.
  9. Performs descriptive and multivariate statistical analyses of data, using computer software.
  10. Designs and implements quality control measures to ensure accurate collection and processing of data.
  11. Contributes in-depth, original thought and relevance to written reports and to the writing of abstracts and manuscripts.

Required Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in a related discipline and two years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Ability to evaluate and assess subject’s suitability for inclusion into studies, obtain informed consent, determine patient eligibility and coordinate patient enrollment.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Well-developed time management and organizational skills with the ability to schedule and coordinate research activities as well as work with a team to develop action items and other means to keep projects moving along according to timeline.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to create and follow research project-related supporting documents as well as report on the status of project deliverables and draft and submit project updates to the study sponsor.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Well-developed clinical and analytical skills including strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to communicate effectively.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Proficient in the use of computer systems and office management programs (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint).

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Experience with clinical research studies in an academic medical center.
