Birmingham City University

Competitive Salary

Head of the School of Engineering and the Built Environment

Birmingham City University is a thriving, modern university with a rich history in the city and wider region. With around 24,000 students from 80 countries, we are a large and diverse place to study, putting students at the heart of everything we do, giving them the best opportunities for future success.

Located in a modern £300M campus in the heart of Birmingham, the School of Engineering and the Built Environment is a thriving, vibrant, and inspiring learning community with a dynamic and growing reputation in research and innovation. We currently have established research groups including specialisms in Computational Modelling, Materials and Advanced Manufacturing, Sensors and Control, Property and Planning, and Sustainability especially through Bio and Water Engineering and through Transforming the Building Lifecycle. Our work is of an applied nature within interdisciplinary teams, often including digital technologies, and focussed on making a strong impact on industry and government.

Building on continuous success in student growth and in sustained advancement of research activities, the School has embarked on a programme of extensive expansion funded by substantial long-term investments. The School has 1300 students and 80 academics across the full suite of engineering and built environment courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level. As part of the University’s wider civic engagement strategy we are a recognised leader in education, training and business solutions, offering a wide range of courses that benefit from active engagement with regional, national and international industry.

We are seeking a Head to lead this exciting school which, given the West Midlands is the country’s home of engineering, needs to symbolise our driving ambition to support the city and the region. We welcome candidates from either of the broad academic disciplines of engineering or the built environment or from relevant parts of industry. What is important is your ambition and drive to deliver real change, to work across the School with stakeholders to refocus the curriculum to be market facing and focussed on student experience and employability, in addition to building our research strengths in what will be an improved REF position. Importantly, candidates must bring a desire to engage externally across the private and public sectors to help drive the ambition of the University.

This role is an excellent opportunity for an academic or industry leader with a passion and a clear vision for the School. If you enjoy making a difference in HE, and thrive on supporting students and staff to excel, then we would be delighted to hear from you.  For full information please visit

The closing date for applications is noon on Friday 13 March 2020.
