About the opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine and Health (FMH) is the largest faculty in the University and contains seven academic schools, including Sydney Medical School, and ten clinical schools across metropolitan and rural campuses. The faculty operates out of the University’s main campus at Camperdown as well as three hospital precincts - Western, Northern and Central – and campuses at Broken Hill, Dubbo & Orange and in the Northern Rivers. Each precinct is a centre of multi-professional and multi-disciplinary education and research. The clinical schools, including Children’s Hospital Westmead Clinical School, each have strong collaborative relationships with the health services within communities in which they are located.

We are seeking to appoint a distinguished academic as Professor or Associate Professor of Paediatrics (Head of Discipline) and Head of Clinical School, Children’s Hospital Westmead Clinical School (CHW clinical school). Based at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW), which houses the Kids Research facility and is part of Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN), the CHW clinical school forms part of the FMH Western Precinct, one of the largest integrated health, education, research and training precincts in child and adolescent health in Australia. The precinct hosts academics, staff and students from some of the faculty’s other academic and clinical schools, including the Westmead Clinical School and Sydney Dental School, together with the multifacility Westmead Research Hub and medical research institutes including the Westmead Institute for Medical Research and the Children’s Medical Research Institute. The precinct is also home to many world renowned research groups in child and adolescent health including in obesity, genomics and gene therapy, neurology, adolescent health, infectious diseases, cardiac disease, allergy and immunology, kidney disease, diabetes and Indigenous health research, and on the precincts is a broader program in functional genomics/disease modelling, genome engineering/vector design and production and data science.

CHW clinical school is responsible for delivery of the child and adolescent health curriculum to the four year MD degree (SMS, Doctor of Medicine Program), postgraduate coursework offerings (Master of Medicine- Paediatrics), research education training (over 200 postgraduate research students), and mentorship for early and mid-career researchers and academics. The school has approximately 40 salaried academic staff and approximately 250 honorary affiliate staff, and embedded professional staff. The Head of Clinical School is a senior management position within SMS.

The successful candidate will be an inspiring academic leader with experience in management in complex environments. The successful applicant must also have evidence of capacity to positively influence external stakeholders and a wide network of established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders, that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the clinical school, school, faculty and University.

The successful candidate will be eligible for opportunities and facilities for clinical work at the CHW. Candidates from all paediatric medical surgical or other subspecialty clinical backgrounds are encouraged to apply, including those with professional expertise in neurology, oncology, immunology, genomic medicine, Indigenous health. Research strengths in the sciences or data of personalised medicine would be a bonus.

Term and remuneration

The initial appointment will be for 5 years with the opportunity for renewal subject to assessment of performance.
