Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Engineering to work on a project to harness quantum defects in Silicon Carbide for high resolution magnetic imaging. The research project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, will develop novel quantitative magnetic field sensors that are based on the manipulation of electronic spins associated with deep-level defects in silicon carbide. Led by Dr Alton Horsfall in the Department of Engineering, in collaboration with Dr Ian Terry in the Department of Physics and Dr Cristian Bonato at Heriot Watt University, the project will investigate the potential of PhotoElectric Magnetic Resonance in a range of silicon carbide devices that will be designed and manufactured by the research team. These will then be tested using equipment at Heriot Watt and Durham.

The role will involve the construction of the experimental equipment, simulation, design and parametric test of a range of electronic devices. The successful candidate will provide supervision to a range of final year and MSc project students, as well as supporting PhD students working in adjacent projects in silicon carbide technology. Identification of future funding opportunities, including industrial collaboration, based on the findings of this project, will be part of the activity in the latter stages.

The project involves working with a diverse range of academic and industrial collaborators and so communication and inter-personal skills will be necessary.
