CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER, DIVISION OF DATA SCIENCE AND INFORMATION
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY
Berkeley, California

Founded in 1868, UC Berkeley is the oldest of the nine research universities with undergraduate programs in the University of California system. As the University of California has expanded across the state, the flagship campus at Berkeley has maintained its prominence within the system and among public universities around the world. Home to more than 30,000 undergraduates, over 11,000 graduate students, 1,600 full-time faculty, and a talented and diverse staff of 8,000, Berkeley is internationally renowned for excellence and pioneering achievements across all disciplines.

UC Berkeley’s development program, led by Julie Hooper, has emerged as a blended model with centralized and decentralized components. Central development in University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) provides leadership, direction, infrastructure, and strategic planning in support of the campus-wide fundraising priorities. Many of UC Berkeley’s schools, colleges, and divisions have strong development programs, building relationships with their constituencies, and major gift support for their own priorities. In the past three years, Berkeley has established a dotted line reporting structure between UDAR and campus units. Central development offers support in principal gifts, gift planning, annual gifts, international development, major gifts/regional programs, foundation relations and corporate philanthropy, as well as services in such areas as events, communications, research, gift administration, stewardship, and information systems.

In 2018-2019, the university raised $634.9 million in gifts, pledges, and private grants – an increase of $65.9 million over the previous fiscal year. The new record represents support from 66,234 donors, the greatest number to the campus in a single year. Alumni comprised the largest share of donors, 63 percent, and they represent 40 percent of the dollar totals. The dramatic figures come one year after the university’s 150th anniversary just as the campus prepares for the public launch of a multi-billion-dollar comprehensive fundraising campaign in February 2020.

With the support and engagement of university and UDAR leaders, UC Berkeley seeks a strategic, collaborative, and entrepreneurial fundraising professional to serve as the inaugural chief development officer (CDO) of the newly formed Division of Data Science and Information. The division’s creation represents a dramatic commitment to leadership in data science: in research, education, societal responsibility, and partnerships between data science and non-data science disciplines across the institution. The first-of-its-kind division, situated as a peer of Berkeley’s colleges and schools, represents one of the most profound changes in the university’s organization in decades.

The Division of Data Science and Information was launched in July 2019 to leverage Berkeley’s preeminence in research and excellence across disciplines to propel data science discovery, education, and impact. Faculty and students from across campus helped shape the vision and foundation for this innovative division, which mirrors the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefines the research university for the digital age. It is designed to meet the opportunities and demands of a world increasingly informed and shaped by data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence in virtually every arena, from health to business to politics; from our cities to our climate to the cosmos.

Reporting to Dr. Jennifer Chayes—incoming associate provost of the Division of Data Science and Information and dean of the School of Information—with a dotted line report to the associate vice chancellor for constituent programs in UDAR, the CDO will partner closely with other academic leaders and UDAR colleagues to build upon the momentum generated by the recent creation of the division. Preparations are underway for the February 2020 public phase launch of the university’s next comprehensive campaign, in which data science will be a top university funding priority.
