CRYO SAMPLE PREP AND FIB-SEM SPECIALISTMIT.nano, to support the operation of a state-of-the-art cryo-EM shared experimental facility (SEF) with a strong focus on developing novel cryo-sample preparation techniques and assisting researchers at MIT.nano and greater MIT community on wide varieties of samples. Will assist with cryo-sample preparation using various vitrification and electron microscopy techniques. Responsibilities include handling biological (up to BL2 level) and soft materials (including polymers and nanocomposites) samples and preparing for imaging; maintaining lab supplies/inventory; hands-on operation and maintenance of the facility’s sample prep current and future equipment (cryo-plungers, plasma cleaners, glow dischargers, cryo-optical microscopes, etc.); hands-on operation of advanced electron microscopy biological and soft materials sample preparation for imaging using Cryo-FIB/SEM; Cryo-FIB/SEM and TEM grids handling and clipping; equipment oversight and support; training on techniques/equipment and BioPrep space safety; handling billing; and providing other support as needed.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in biology or similar scientific discipline; at least four years’ relevant experience; expertise in cryo-sample preparation and electron microscopy imaging techniques; ability to teach others complex technical protocols and equipment use; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; complete mastery of written and spoken English for technical discussion and user training; ability to interact with a diverse population in a flexible, team-oriented environment; willingness to work in a BSL2 laboratory and with blood-borne pathogens; and comfort with literature searches and outreach to other experts in the field. Seek a hands-on, detail-oriented individual who can troubleshoot new samples as developed, ultimately be integrated into all activities of the EM suite, and acquire new skills as new instrumentation is brought online. TEM experience preferred. Job #17981
