Employer
UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM
Location
Birmingham, West Midlands (GB)
Closing date
1 Mar 2020

Our heritage as Britain’s first civic university is combined with one of the most compelling and ambitious agendas in higher education. With the financial strength to be able to invest in intellectual capacity, the campus and student experience, the University of Birmingham is a global university at the heart of an ambitious city. Characterised by a tradition of innovation, research at the University has broken new ground, pushed forward the boundaries of knowledge, and had a significant impact on people’s lives. The University is a member of the The Alan Turing Institute, contributing expertise to strengthen a growing scientific and industry network for data and AI research in the UK, ultimately advancing the world-changing potential of data science.

Following the successful tenure of Professor Andy Schofield, recently appointed Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University, we seek to appoint a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The College is one of the largest groupings of engineers and physical scientists in Europe and is focused on continuous enhancement of the student educational experience; growing partnerships with employers, research funders and beneficiaries; and making a significant contribution to society through outstanding research. Three overarching themes unite much of the College’s research: Science Frontiers; Advanced Manufacturing; and Resilience, Energy and Sustainability. With significant recent investment, the College is home to new research centres in Quantum, Rail, Nuclear Robotics and Energy; in 2020 a state-of-the-art new building will house the reconfigured School of Engineering and the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network Centre of Excellence for Digital Systems; and in 2022, along with the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, the College’s School of Chemistry will be housed in a new Molecular Sciences building, a dedicated hub, fostering research and innovation and a place to connect that research to education, promoting collaborative work.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Engineering and Physical Sciences is responsible for providing academic leadership and oversight across a vibrant community of seven schools, over 1000 academic and professional services staff, and over 5,000 students.

They will be responsible for leading the College in the delivery of its exciting and ambitious plans to increase research income and quality over the next 10 years, our International Strategy, as well as supporting education and the student experience on-campus, overseas (notably through our Dubai campus and the Joint Institute with Jinan University), and through our distance-learning offer.

As a member of the University Executive Board, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor has a powerful voice at the highest level of leadership and management in the University and works alongside a variety of senior leaders across the institution to successfully implement and deliver one of the most compelling and ambitious agendas in Higher Education.

This is a role for an inspirational leader who can lead, shape, and realise the growth agenda of the College. In joining, you will have an outstanding reputation in research in one of the seven Engineering and Physical Sciences disciplines, a commitment to outstanding education, proven leadership and management credentials and the vision and capability to enhance the College’s performance. As a member of an outstanding leadership team you will have the opportunity to shape initiatives across the University.
