About the Role

The Head of School leads the academic and financial performance of the School supporting all of its colleagues in meeting the strategic aims of the Faculty and of Queen Mary. This will include further enhancing the School’s world class research activity, maintaining and developing its excellent teaching and student experience, continuing to foster the School’s key stakeholder relationships and growing its international reputation and links

The Head of School reports to Vice-Principal & Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science & Engineering. The appointee will form close working relationships with other Heads of School in the Faculty and will play an active role as a member of the Faculty Executive.  They will liaise with other senior colleagues in the School, including the Deans for Education, Research and Global Engagement in order to coordinate, promote and implement Faculty-wide strategies.  The Head of School will supervise, via delegation as appropriate, all academic staff within the School.  The Head of School will work with members of the professional services, at school and university level, to represent the School's interests and ensure compliance with Queen Mary regulations.

About You

Applications are invited from Professorial level candidates with exceptional records of research in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, in order to balance senior academic numbers in those areas in the longer term. All candidates should show evidence of strategic vision, strong commitment to maintaining and developing a collegial learning community and proven strengths in academic leadership and management.

About the School

One of five schools within the Faculty of Science & Engineering, the School of Engineering and Material Sciences is a large school which provides outstanding degree programmes coupled with internationally leading research.  The School has strong international relationships, including a key strategic partnership with Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in China to provide transnational university education in Engineering Materials.

The School has seen a £50m investment in its buildings in the last 5 years and access to high performance computing as well as state-of-the-art experimental facilities incorporated within laboratories for Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Electro-hydrodynamics, Aeronautical Engineering, Thermo-fluids and Biomedical Engineering. The School has a proven track record of success in attracting the brightest minds from across the country and the world.

The Head of School position is expected to be for a three year term (alongside the substantive permanent Professorial appointment), with the prospect of a second term. In recognition of the significance of the role, Queen Mary protects the postholder’s time by allowing 80% of full time hours to be dedicated to the leadership and management activities of the Head of School role, with the balance devoted to academic activity.  The position is based at the Mile End Campus with the expectation that some duties may require attendance at other Queen Mary sites.  The Professorial salary will be competitive and commensurate with the experience and academic standing of the postholder. The Head of School position attracts an additional responsibility allowance.
