Position Overview

The Lecturer/Clinical Educator is responsible for the coordination and delivery of Postgraduate Clinical Psychology Programs related to professional practice and clinical placement ensuring adherence to the clinical education accreditation requirements and preparation of accreditation responses.

This position represents the public face of the discipline and works closely with a range of external partners including local, state, national clinical placement partners to ensure a high quality, sustainable clinical placement program. The role includes the development and delivery of resources to support clinical educators and placement providers. Limited clinical supervision may be required in accordance with APAC requirements. The position will also contribute to clinical education in the Psychology program.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Management of and undertaking a patient caseload to ensure the sustainability of the psychology clinic and clinical placements.
  2. Contribute to the administrative functions and intellectual life for the Discipline of Psychology including the Psychology Clinic.
  3. Contribute to the teaching and learning agenda for clinical subjects as well as the pre- and post-clinical subjects related to clinical placement and professional practice development.
  4. Contribute to clinical education in the Psychology program, preparing and delivering lectures, tutorials, curriculum materials and assessment items as required.
  5. Coordinate all placement and professional practice activities including the preparation and delivery of educational material relevant to clinical education and placement to clinical educators, students and other relevant stakeholders.
  6. Participate in community and external engagement activities to maintain existing and identify new opportunities for placement and professional clinical practice.
  7. Ensure the clinical education component of the Psychology course meets the accreditation requirements as prescribed by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council and prepare accreditation documents.
  8. Prepare reports and maintain clinical education and placement databases. Liaise extensively and provide advice to the Head of Psychology, the Clinical Course Coordinator, and academic subject coordinators regarding overall professional practice matters to ensure the smooth organisation of student placements and expectations.
  9. Develop and distribute the annual professional experience handbook, calendars and student placement materials in accordance with accreditation and clinical education requirements.

Generic Accountabilities

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.

  1. The Lecturer/Clinical Educator, Psychology is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Lecturer/Clinical Educator, Psychology is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance.
  3. The Lecturer/Clinical Educator, Psychology is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

Special Conditions

  • It is a requirement of this position to be endorsed as a Clinical Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia and maintain AHPRA registration.
  • It is a requirement of this position to be approved as a Clinical Supervisor with the Psychology Board of Australia and maintain AHPRA registration.

Selection Criteria

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.

Essential

  1. Higher Degree qualification in Psychology from an accredited tertiary institution with subsequent relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education and/or training.
  2. Experience in, or the ability to acquire proficiency in, the administration of clinical placements and education for health professional students in public, community and private health care settings.
  3. Experience in, or the ability to acquire proficiency in, teaching and curriculum development. Demonstrated high level written, oral communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate appropriately, effectively and confidentially with a range of stakeholders.
  4. Demonstrated well developed organisational and time management skills including problem solving skills and proven ability to work largely unsupervised and respond to competing priorities.
  5. Demonstrated computer and technology literacy, with skills in a range of computer software e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe.

Desirable

  1. Experience working in a University or other public sector environment.
