The Opportunity

In an exciting development for Monash University’s Faculty of IT, Professor Floyd Mueller has recently joined the Department of Human Centred Computing, bringing with him the innovative and ground-breaking Exertion Games Lab, which researches the future of play and games in order to understand how to design better interactive experiences.  Within the lab there is a particular focus on games that put the human body in the centre of the experience, and draws from interaction design, sports, psychology, human-computer interaction (HCI) and embodiment thinking to contribute to human-player interaction.

Topics of interest include:

  • Digital aquatic play (with Sarah Jane Pell)
  • Interactive muscle memory (motor memory) (with Elise van den Hoven)
  • Human-Computer Integration
  • Interactive eating
  • Playing with flying pixels (i.e. quadcopters)
  • Interactive rock-climbing

The amazing space that houses the lab includes a full size rock-climbing wall, and dozens of amazing toys and gadgets, and encourages a hands-on collaborative environment that is unlike any other research environment.  The culture in the Exertion Games Lab is one of interdisciplinary work. We emphasize the development of working prototypes in order to fully understand what play is, why we play, and how we will play in the future. We do this because we believe playing is a fundamental part of what makes us humans who we are, and an understanding of this brings us closer to our vision of a better world filled with interactive technologies that support human values.

The Exertion Games Lab is looking for 3 candidates who value an interdisciplinary design studio environment. You will be highly motivated, extremely creative as well as technical, and also have highly developed analytical and communicative skills. Prior research (publications in relevant venues, etc.) and teaching experience is required; and so are hardware prototyping abilities (Arduino, etc.) and programming skills. We are looking at creativity, excellence and drive.

You might find it useful to read about the lab’s vision:

These roles are full-time positions; however, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.

At Monash University, we are committed to being a Child Safe organisation. This position at the University will require the incumbent to hold a valid Working with Children Check.
