Position Overview

The Associate Director, Innovation develops, leads and manages the university strategy in relation to innovation, innovation partnerships and initiatives, and the university’s innovation centres. The Associate Director will provide strong, effective, leadership, management, mentoring and professional development, to staff within their own team, establishing a culture of teamwork, transparency and openness, and maintaining strong communication channels at all times. Working collaboratively with key academics from across the university, the Associate Director, Innovation will lead theamatic innovation and entreprenureship activities and location specific innovation complex managers to ensure synergistic innovation activities across all campuses.

Division of Research and Innovation

The Division of Research and Innovation plays a pivotal role in the University by developing and implementing research policy, identifying and fostering research strength, and promoting and coordinating collaboration with governments, industry, publicly funded research agencies and other universities. The Division is comprised of: Policy and Projects, Research Infrastructure Directorate, Research Services, Graduate Research School, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies and The Cairns Institute.

JCU Connect

JCU Connect promotes, fosters, supports and administers research activity at JCU with its main areas of responsibility being: administration of research grants; negotiation and administration of research contracts; technology transfer; coordination of the University's research ethics and integrity responsibilities; collection and reporting of research performance data; development of research policy and advice to senior management, and the coordination of support for new research initiatives.

JCU Connect is the key driver of the Universities innovation strategy and agenda to ensure synergistic innovation activities across all campuses to leverage maximum benefit. The JCU innovation centres including the Cairns Innovation Centre are important enablers in the translation of JCU’s already strong institutional research and education capability into commercial products and activity.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Lead the development and implementation of JCU’s Innovation strategy and stakeholder engagement including consultation with Senior Staff and Executives as required, and leaders at all levels, to inform the development of solutions, and ownership of implementation and outcomes.
  2. Develop and maintain strategic partnerships and collaborative working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders internally and externally, including University Executive and senior management, funding bodies, industry, government and community organisations, hosted organisations.
  3. Manage the innovation priorities through stakeholder engagement, planning, communication and project management of a wide range of deliverables across the University that contribute to ongoing innovation eco-systems development.
  4. Ensure synergistic innovation activities across all campuses to ensure maximum benefit is derived from the innovation centres, leveraging government funding where available.
  5. Provide effective leadership, management and mentoring of the innovation team, including performance reviews, to establish a culture of teamwork, transparency and openness, maintaining strong communication channels at all times.
  6. Work collaboratively with Divisions, Colleges/Directorates to ensure synergistic innovation activities across all campuses adopting a OneJCU approach.
  7. Identify, develop and implement relevant business processes, policies, improvement projects and reports, through active consultation and data informed innovation to generate improvements and underpin the operations of the university innovation ecosystem and associated centres or institutes.
  8. Develop and translate the strategic direction of the Cairns Innovation Centre (CIC) into sound operations, best use of resources and productive engagement with regional and wider economic environments.
  9. Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.

Generic Accountabilities

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.

  1. The Associate Director, Innovation is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Associate Director, Innovation is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations.
  3. The Associate Director, Innovation is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

Selection Criteria

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.

Essential

  1. Postgraduate qualification in management or related field; and proven expertise in the management of human, financial and physical resources in a general management context.
  2. Proven strong leadership skills and delivery of management initiatives within an education context at a senior level including knowledge and experience in the development and implementation of governance principles, frameworks and models.
  3. Demonstrated extensive stakeholder engagement and consultation experience coupled with the ability to work with diverse groups with competing interests to achieve beneficial outcomes through the use of written and oral communication skills, including report writing, problem solving and the ability to negotiate and influence stakeholders at a senior level. Strong customer focus with demonstrated facilitation, interpersonal and networking skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective, collaborative and productive partnerships and to negotiate effectively with a diverse clientele both internal and external.
  4. Demonstrated experience in business and strategic planning and ability to implement strategic and operational objectives, with a proven reputation for innovation and effective leadership.
  5. Proven entrepreneurial skills and ability to shape and lead strategic thinking, including an ability to inspire a sense of purpose and direction.

Desirable

  1. Familiarity with the higher education sector.
