About the UWA Oceans Institute and the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre:

The UWA Oceans Institute brings together the collective strength of the University’s best and brightest researchers into a multidisciplinary, integrated research organisation across oceanography, ecology, engineering, resource management, social sciences and governance. The goal is to capitalise on UWA’s existing research strengths and utilise them to deliver Ocean Solutions for Humanity’s Grand Challenges.

The Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre is a partnership between the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD; fisheries) and the UWA, represented by the Oceans Institute. This post is line-managed via the UWA OI, but the post holder represents and works with all IOMRC partners.

About the opportunity

Reporting to the Oceans Institute Director, you will be responsible for establishing and managing processes and projects to ensure the effective and efficient functioning of the Facility buildings, including compliance, to advance the IOMRC research partnership. You will manage the administration and day to day operations of the research facilities, with particular focus on the Waterman’s Bay Facility, liaising as required with IOMRC partners, UWA Campus Management and others responsible for the fabric and operation of the two IOMRC buildings.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate the following:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (Bachelor degree with Hons; MSc is highly desirable) or demonstrated equivalent competency
  • Substantial management experience in the context of a research environment and ability to identify gaps and implement effective administrative systems and practices
  • Project management skills, both to provide support to projects initiated by researchers, and to give leadership to projects identified by the Operations Manager, including an ability to see them to a satisfactory conclusion
  • Demonstrated understanding of aquatic research, and relevant technical skills as demonstrated by previous experience
  • Strong knowledge of relevant regulations, practical knowledge of compliance control measures and ability to work with experts in occupational health and safety, biosafety and biosecurity, and animal ethics
  • Excellent interpersonal, networking, negotiation, written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to consult and build rapport with a range of people at all work levels to maintain positive relationships with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to set priorities and use initiative to contribute to the objectives of IOMRC for the facilities
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to long term planning and strategic direction at an influential level with the ability to research, write reports, background papers, and make presentations in relation to facilities management and the support of the research activities of the IOMRC partnership Proficiency in a range of computing skills including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email and internet, and in financial management and accurate record keeping
  • Highly developed analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Ability to work independently, show initiative and work collaboratively with demonstrated team building skills
