The School of Biological Sciences is part of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences. It is made up of three research disciplines, including Ecosystems Biology & Sustainability, Food Safety & Nutrition, and Microbes & Pathogen Biology. Many staff within the School are also members of the Institute for Global Food Security GRI: the Institute is ranked No 1 in the UK for research intensity in Agriculture, Veterinary and Food Sciences (REF 2014).
We are recruiting two Research Fellows who will be highly productive, ambitious and collaborative members of the Fish Genetics Research Group led by Prof. Paulo Prodöhl in IGFS. The positions are linked to the SFI-DEL multi institute Investigators Award "Wild farmed interactions in a changing world: formulation of a predictive methodology to inform environmental best practice to secure long-term sustainability of global wild and farm fish populations". This is a multidisciplinary/multi-institutional study coordinated by Prof Paulo Prodöhl and Prof Philip McGinnity (University College Cork) that capitalises on the existence of unique common garden experimental field facilities, comprehensive multi-generation (50 years) archive biopsy material, and both, in-house modern 'omics and High-Performance Computing (HPC) equipment infrastructure. The group employs novel analytical advances in population genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics and quantitative genetics, to understand the complex effects of wild-farm hybridisation on the dynamics of quantitative traits and fitness in wild populations. The successful applicants will be responsible for independent research (data analyses), supervision, planning, day-to-day lab management, collaborations and outreach. The positions are based at Queen's University Belfast. Successful candidates will be joining a multidisciplinary/multi-institutional team of researchers and other Ph.D. students, and will be will working closely with project collaborators in University College Cork, Marine Institute Ireland, and University of Glasgow.
The successful candidates must have:
- Have or about to obtain a PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Systems Biology, Population Genomics, Evolutionary Biology or related areas
- 3 years recent relevant research experience.
- Experience with the analysis of high throughput genomics datasets.
- Programming skills in one of the following languages:
- R language
- Shell scripting
