The School of Biological Sciences is part of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences.  It is made up of three research disciplines, including Ecosystems Biology & Sustainability, Food Safety & Nutrition, and Microbes & Pathogen Biology. Many staff within the School are also members of the Institute for Global Food Security GRI: the Institute is ranked No 1 in the UK for research intensity in Agriculture, Veterinary and Food Sciences (REF 2014).  

We are recruiting two Research Fellows who will be highly productive, ambitious and collaborative members of the Fish Genetics Research Group led by Prof. Paulo Prodöhl in the Institute for Global Food Security at the School of Biological Sciences. The first position is linked to the BEYOND 2020 (Burrishoole Ecosystem Observatory Network 2020 - https://www.dkit.ie/beyond-2020) and the second position is linked to the FishKOSM (Fisheries Knowledge for Optimal Sustainable Management) multi-institute projects. Capitalising on the existence of "in-house" modern genomics infrastructures and bioinformatics capacity, the successful candidates will develop and implement metabarcoding and metagenomics protocols for examining food web structures for several key fish species in the freshwater (Beyond 2020) or the marine environment (FishKOSM). The successful candidates will be responsible for independent research, supervision, planning, day-to-day lab management, collaborations and outreach. The positions are based at Queen's University Belfast. The successful candidates will be joining a multidisciplinary/multi-institutional team of researchers and other Ph.D. students, and will be will working closely with project collaborators in University College Cork, Marine Institute Ireland, Dundalk Institute of Technology, Dublin City University, University College Dublin and University of Glasgow. 

The successful candidates must have: 

• Have or about to obtain a PhD in a relevant area to include Population Genomics, Evolutionary Biology or other related areas of Biological Sciences.
• At least 3 years recent relevant research experience.
• Practical laboratory experience in molecular genetics including DNA extraction, PCR, DNA sequencing, phylogenetic analysis, population genetics, environmental DNA, bioinformatics

Post 1 is available until 31 October 2021.

Post 2 is available for 28 months or until 31December 2022 (whichever is sooner).
