Our heritage as the original ‘redbrick’ is combined with one of the most compelling and ambitious agendas in Higher Education. Quite simply, at Birmingham, we make things happen. Birmingham is a leading member of the Russell Group and a founder member of the Universities 21 global network of research-intensive universities.

With more than 8,000 staff, 36,000 students and 300,000 alumni across the globe, we think, recruit, and compete worldwide. Ranked in the top 100 universities globally and the top 20 in all domestic league tables, the quality of what we do at Birmingham is widely recognised. We were awarded Gold in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework, and in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), more than 80% of our research was rated as internationally excellent or world-leading.

Ranked 81st in the QS World University Rankings 2020, the University has a significant international presence. The University was one of the founding partners of, and remains highly active in, the Universities 21 global network of research-intensive universities. We collaborate with partners across the world to produce ground-breaking research, deliver innovative teaching, and to create opportunities for students and staff to gain international experience. The University currently has some 7,000 international students. As a University with a global mind-set, we have offices in New Delhi, Brussels, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. We opened the first (start-up) phase of our Dubai campus in 2018 and we are on schedule to open a full campus, with capacity for up to 4,500 students in September 2021. Our Dubai campus reflects the University and will be a centre of education and research, offering a growing range of undergraduate, post graduate and CPD programmes.

The Director of Birmingham Global is part of the senior leadership team in External Relations and will play an important role in delivering the International Strategic Framework within the context of Birmingham 2026, working closely with the Pro Vice Chancellor for International. They will have direct responsibility for progressing work across priority regions and partners, both externally and internally, reflecting the increased focus on research and funding that address complex, multi-disciplinary global challenges. This will require the post holder to take an aligned multi-regional and partner approach. They will build strong collaborations internally and externally and lead an experienced and successful Birmingham Global team. In addition, the University has an ambitious strategy for its study abroad and exchange programmes and the Director of Birmingham Global will play a significant role in delivering these ambitions. The Director will act as a key ambassador for the University and be experienced in representing influential institutions internationally to produce meaningful partnerships.

Across all of our Professional Services, we recognise that it is our people who are the heart of what we do, and so we are focused on creating a culture for them to thrive. We place great value on customer satisfaction, recognising the importance of collaboration with our partners to agree service standards and clear outcomes. We know that it is important to get the essentials right as well as delivering larger initiatives, and we seek to continually simplify and innovate in our services.
