Job Title: Thin Film Technologist (KTP Associate)

Fixed Term: Full time for 33 months
An exciting opportunity for a materials/thin film technologist has become available to work full time on a 33-month Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). The aim of the project is to establish plasma assisted vacuum-based thin film deposition technology within Teer Coatings Ltd (www.teercoatings.co.uk ) production environment for the deposition of optical coatings. This will provide additional functional benefits to existing process technologies and products at Teer Coatings Ltd, based in Droitwich, Worcestershire. Additionally, the use of patented microwave plasma deposition technology developed within the University of the West of Scotland`s Institute of Thin Films, Sensors & Imaging (www.itfsi.com), provides a step change in thin film deposition capability.

Teer Coatings Ltd is a specialist Physical Vapour Deposition coating company specialising in the design and manufacture of thin film vacuum deposition systems, and provision of thin film coating services and contract research & development. Applications include automotive, medical, aerospace and energy storage. Teer Coatings Ltd primarily utilise physical vapour sputter deposition and are looking to add functionality into current processes and establish new applications with a primary focus on optical coating markets. Teer are firmly committed to research & development and are heavily geared to progress and innovation in thin film technology. Customers rely on Teer Coatings tailored, innovative solutions and extensive product range.
The candidate will receive training in Chartered Management Institute (up to level 5), working with senior company management to realise benefits to the business and apply their degree and lead their own project in a business environment. The successful candidate maybe offered the opportunity to register free of charge for a Higher Degree.
The successful candidate must possess a minimum BSc in physics/engineer/materials/thin films-related subject.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge and/or experience in some of the following areas:
Surface analysis and characterisation techniques, such as SEM, TEM, AFM, optical and engineering thin film measurements & analysis.
Optical coatings and measurement experience.
Knowledge of research methods and project management.
Familiarity with physical vapour deposition processes.
Computer software skills
The successful candidate will be employed by the University of the West of Scotland but will be based at Teer Coatings. The associate will be fully supported by both company staff and staff at UWS. In addition, the associate will receive mentoring support from a local KTP Advisor and will have access to staff from the UWS KTP Centre; providing further support and guidance during your period as a KTP Associate and providing access to an extensive network of KTP projects throughout the UK.
