Established in September 2016 by its foundational head Professor Mark G Macklin, the School of Geography at the University of Lincoln represents one of the “most significant investments in UK university geography for a generation” (Dr Rita Gardner CBE, former director of the Royal Geographical Society). The school currently has 146 undergraduate and postgraduate students, 20 academic, research and support staff, and its first cohort of undergraduates will graduate in September 2020. We are particularly proud of our demographically and internationally diverse academic team, who bring global reach and expertise to both their research and teaching, and will soon be joined by a new Chair of Human Geography. We have established a core interdisciplinary research centre, the Lincoln Centre of Water and Planetary Health (LCWPH), the first of its kind in the UK, and have recently appointed Professor Chris J Thomas (Global Chair in Water and Planetary Health) as co-director alongside Professor Macklin. The LCWPH focuses on solving the most pressing global environmental and societal problems emerging from the world’s largest rivers. These include climate change impacts on extreme floods and droughts, flood-related contamination from metal mining and processing, and water-borne diseases affecting humans and animals where riverine environments provide the principal habitat. An emerging area of interest is environmental flows of antibiotic contaminants and the subsequent evolutionary ecology of antimicrobial resistance.

As part of the continued growth and development of our ambitious school we now seek to appoint two lecturers/senior lecturers: one in the area of Earth Surface Processes and the other in Biogeography/Spacial Ecology. We are looking for highly creative individuals who are developing an innovative and exciting research agenda and are team players, capable of contributing to and leading key aspects of interdisciplinary research in the School of Geography and LCWPH. We encourage applicants with technical skills from other disciplines in addition to geography (such as, for example, climatology, hydrology, Earth observation, geoinformatics, molecular biology, epidemiology, artificial intelligence, population dynamics) that may be deployed in the context of geographic research at both local and global scales. We believe that new questions and synergies will require new data, so experience in field programmes is highly desirable, including in remote and challenging environments, including urban areas worldwide.   Candidates must present a strong track record in research relevant to their career stage, evidenced by success in attracting external funding and publications to support the School’s REF2020 submission. 

Candidates should demonstrate a passion and commitment to teaching and learning both at an undergraduate and postgraduate level. The appointments dovetail with our new PGT programmes MGeog and the interdisciplinary MSc in Water and Planetary Health that will start in September 2020.   Appointees will each be the co-ordinator for one of these schemes, which include field courses abroad.
