The School of Social and Political Sciences is at the forefront of teaching and research in the social sciences in Australia. The School has a team of dedicated academic and professional staff in the disciplines of Political Science, Criminology, Anthropology, Development Studies and Sociology as well as allied research centres providing a dynamic and rewarding environment for staff and students.
About the role
The School of Social and Political Sciences seeks to appoint a Professor in Development Studies who will bring internationally recognised expertise, outstanding research and scholarship, exceptional teaching, engagement and outreach skills to enhance the growth and reputation of the Development Studies program at the University of Melbourne. The appointee will have a research specialisation in an aspect of Development Studies, and an established track record of research performance through refereed publications and research grants.
The successful appointee will be an experienced academic leader with the vision, capacity and interpersonal skills to work with colleagues to advance the research, teaching and engagement agendas of Development Studies, within the School, Faculty and University.
A principal duty of the Professor of Development Studies will be to lead the successful establishment of innovative research programs and attract competitive research funding. The Professor in Development Studies will be expected to make significant contributions in the areas of research, academic leadership in innovative teaching and curriculum development, mentoring and professional development of junior colleagues, and to foster interdisciplinary activities and engagement activities connected to the discipline.
- A Level E Academic will have attained recognition as an eminent authority in their discipline and achieved distinction at national and international levels

About you
The successful candidate will have a completed PhD in Development Studies or a related field an internationally recognised publication record of distinction and innovation. A record of success in gaining competitive national and international research grants, extensive knowledge of the development sector and demonstrated ability to collaborate with industry partners to deliver collaborative engagement programmes. The capacity to develop and foster new engagement activities, including the willingness and capacity to lead at public events. Demonstrated ability to successfully lead academic teams in collaborative and interdisciplinary research. Demonstrated capacity to mentor staff and provide service. Demonstrated excellence in curriculum development, including innovative online pedagogies. Demonstrated excellence in teaching. Demonstrated excellence in leadership and management including the capacity to contribute to strategic planning that will advance the discipline. Demonstrated ability to supervise honours and graduate level research theses, and to participate in supervisory panels at the graduate research level.Demonstrated capacity to contribute to the collegial environment and intellectual culture of the School of Social and Political Sciences, including the ability to interact positively with academic and administrative staff.
