About the opportunity 

We are in a period of exciting and significant investment in our Faculty of Medicine and Health and in order to deliver on the University’s ambitious strategic plan, we are looking for a Associate Lecturer or Lecturer in Indigenous Health Education to join the Sydney Medical School.

The primary purpose for the position is to undertake teaching and research (and contribute to their integration) in Indigenous health witin the Doctor of Medicine program (MD).

The appointee will join the Indigenous Health Unit in the Sydney Medical School in supporting the Head of Indigenous Health Unit and the Director of the Medical program. The Indigenous Health Unit has many roles including the recruitment, retention and progression of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across the MD program. The Unit has an important role in the development and teaching of Indigenous health curriculum across the four year medical program. The Associate Lecturer and Lecturer in Indigenous Health will be required to:

  • Contribute to knowledge ofIndigenous health within the Sydney Medical School
  • Contribute to providing and improving teaching and learning outcomes in the Indigenous health curriculum witin the Medical program.
  • Contribute to creating a positive environment where indigenous culture is embraced

The appointable will support the Faculty of Medicine and Health’s commitment to create higher education and leadership opportunities, support and resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in the Sydney Medical School, especially those in their foundation year.

About you

As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Associate Lecturer or Lecturer in Indigenous Health (Education Focused) who can demonstrate the following skills, experience and qualifications:

  • Proven record of work in and with Indigenous communities which demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in health sciences or public health
  • Demonstrated experience in Indigenous student support both academic and pastoral.
  • Deep and broad experience in teaching and learning in a tertiary environment, as evidenced by participation in team teaching within an established program and experience in teaching in a variety of settings
  • Master of Philosophy (commencing) or PhD (near completion) in an academic field relevant to the discipline or other higher professional qualifications (desirable but not essential)

This position is full-time, however, there is flexibility regarding the hours worked.

This position is within the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. This new Faculty was established in April 2018 by uniting the existing Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Midwifery, and Pharmacy, and (from 2020) Health Sciences. When fully established, The Faculty of Medicine and Health will be one of the largest health and medical research and teaching enterprises in the Southern Hemisphere. It will be made up of seven academic schools and ten clinical schools.
