The University of Chicago is seeking qualified applicants for a part-time position to teach Statistics and Research Methods for Emergency Managers in the Master of Science in Threat and Response Management program, beginning Autumn 2019.  Current University faculty and staff, as well as professionals working in relevant positions outside of the University, are eligible to apply. The course will be offered at the downtown Cityfront campus in Chicago.

About the Course

The goal of this course is to ensure that students gain a fundamental understanding of:

• the basics of research design, from framing questions and understanding literature to analyzing and communicating results
• quantitative methods in social science research (e.g., univariate and bivariate statistics, statistical significance, logistic regression)
• qualitative methods in social science research (e.g., observational research, interviewing, survey design and administration)
• the benefits and challenges of using these methods in emergency preparedness research.

The course operates in an executive format and includes nine (9) hours of instruction offered over one three-day weekend each month. Courses meet for three consecutive months each quarter (total 27 instructional hours). In Autumn 2019, the course will meet:

March 5, 6, 7

Responsibilities:

• Develop syllabus including topics, learning objectives, and assignments
• Develop and execute in-class content (lectures, exercises/activities, and/or lab).
• Develop graded assignments, which must minimally include a mid-term and final assignment and course participation grade.
• Grade assignments and return comments and grades to students via Canvas course site in timely manner (within 1 week for weekly assignments and within 10 days of submission for larger assignments).
• Attend all monthly in-person sessions (27 instructional hours per academic quarter).
• Hold monthly office hours to coincide with course schedule.  Instructors are expected to spend 6 number of hours meeting or communicating with students over the course of each month.
• There may be potential to develop online content to supplement coursework. If using online instruction, you must plan and create content in conjunction with the School’s online instruction design team. Note: adequate time and planning is required for this option.

Qualifications
Qualifications

• Qualified applicants must have a graduate-level degree; a Ph.D. is preferred.
• Candidates with prior teaching experience and/or relevant practical experience in quantitative and qualitative statistics and research methods for social scientists are strongly preferred.
• Experience working or teaching in emergency management, public policy or public health is preferred.
