Description
During the Winter and Spring Quarters of the 2019-20 academic year the Department of Music has part-time teaching opportunities in Ethnomusicology to meet areas of departmental need created by the reduced duties of a current faculty member. We seek applicants to teach an area studies course and/or a course in ethnographic methods. The start date of these positions is January 1, 2020 and/or March 30, 2020; regular presence on campus throughout the Winter Quarter and/or Spring Quarter 2020 is required.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Ethnomusicology or a related field and prior experience teaching ethnomusicology at the university or four-year college level is required. Responsibilities include preparing and teaching seminar-style courses for graduate and/or undergraduate students and holding regularly scheduled office hours.

Successful candidates may be offered to teach one or two classes. In 2019-20, the per-course salary is $6,861. This position is non-renewable and is not benefits-eligible.

  • a cover letter that addresses professional and teaching experience and discusses approaches to pedagogy
  • a one-page course description for an area-studies course in ethnomusicology and/or course in ethnographic methods

Optionally, course evaluations (if available) may be uploaded.
Following the review of applications, we will contact applicants with the academic training and experience most appropriate for the available courses. Our review of applications will begin on September 30, 2019 and will continue until the position is filled or the posting is closed.

This position will be part of the Service Employees International Union and is contingent upon budgetary approval.  Only complete applications will be considered.  For further questions, please contact Academic Affairs and Operations Manager Peter Gillette: ptgillette@uchicago.edu.
