Overview

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is a collaborative national center for fusion energy research. The Laboratory advances the coupled fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research, and, with collaborators, is developing the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.

PPPL has a very exciting and rare opportunity, to join a department during a significant growth period. As Electrical Safety Officer, this position is responsible as the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab’s Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for NFPA 70 and 70E, and for leading the development and implementation of the PPPL electrical safety program, consistent with Laboratory Environment, Safety, and Health policies, DOE requirements, and consensus standards. The objective of the electrical safety program is to ensure safe operations, maintenance and repair to PPPLs vast electrical system and manage associated risks through control of electrical hazards.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), Subject Matter Expert, and interpretive authority for NFPA 70, NFPA 70E and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) for medium and high voltage.
  • Review and approve facility wide electrical design, construction, operation, and decommissioning activities to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and code requirements, particularly regarding medium and high voltage installations (600 volts and above). Participate in design reviews for the above activities.
  • Inspect medium and high voltage electrical installations and construction job sites to monitor adherence to safety practices and procedures.
  • Develop, maintain and conduct training on Electrical Safety topics including Basic Electrical Safety, Lockout/Tagout, Capacitor Banks, Battery Banks and Electric Utilization.
  • Maintain currency in applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations and codes, and modify PPPL policies and practices to ensure adherence to the latest requirements.
