About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is Australia’s premier University with an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. It employs over 7,500 permanent staff supporting over 70,000 students.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers one of the most comprehensive and diverse ranges of humanities and social science studies in the Asia-Pacific region and is regularly ranked in the top 20 faculties of its kind. The Department of Writing Studies in the School of Literature, Arts, and Media, which now includes the Sydney College of the Arts, is the first of its kind in Australia. Modelled on writing centres and writing programs in the US and Europe, the department currently teaches various forms of Rhetoric (Classical, New, Visual, Digital, Cultural, and Indigenous), Composition, Critical Thinking and Professional Writing through a range of written, spoken, web-based and visual texts. Its interdisciplinary staff integrate research interests in these areas with expertise in Australian Studies, Linguistics, English Literature, Digital Media and Creative Writing. The department has recently added several full-time lecturers and enjoys increasing student numbers. It aims to introduce a Writing Studies Major in 2021, part of an innovative and expansive offering of units.

We seek to appoint a Professor in Writing Studies and Rhetoric to help shape the department’s future at a transformational point in its history. That applicant will be a leading authority in Writing Studies and Rhetoric, with a strong profile in publishing, obtaining research grants, and in enriching research cultures through mentorship and example. They will have a proven record in curriculum development and a demonstrated commitment to inventive and effective teaching. The successful applicant will be central to the successful implementation of the proposed Major and to the ongoing extension of the department’s teaching programme. That applicant will have a record of collegial governance and will be expected to take up the role of Chair of Department. They will use that leadership position to promote the department’s culture of research and teaching excellence.
