Job description
Coventry University is recruiting a team of gardeners, predominantly based at the University’s new site at Ryton Organic, to keep the grounds presented to a very high standard, to support research and to help with their continued development. The grounds have organic status with the Soil Association and consist of a number of interesting theme gardens, as well as vegetable gardens, fruit, large conservation area and woodland.
This is an excellent opportunity to combine on the job training, guidance, and support with taught modules at college to gain the necessary skills and knowledge to gain the Apprenticeship Level Two in horticulture over a 2 year period. As a Horticulture Apprentice you will have the opportunity to get involved in everything from amenity horticulture (i.e. the care of turf, parks, gardens and other green spaces) through to cultivation of plants including:
- Planting, pruning and weeding operations
- Safe use and maintenance of hand held petrol driven tools
- Use and maintenance of a range of ride on machinery
- A full range of planned maintenance tasks
Candidates must have a keen interest in, plants, and gardens; be enthusiastic, reliable and demonstrate a commitment to learning. To be eligible for the college course you must have GCSE English and Maths at A to C / 4-9 grade, or be prepared to attain an equivalent qualification at college.
The application process will be a short, informal, first-stage interview and then the successful candidate will be invited back to spend a day with our Grounds team, where you will have the opportunity to get to know the team and impress them with your work ethic, enthusiasm and positive attitude.
Please note that the successful candidate must be able to travel to Ryton daily.
