About the position

We have a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology (IIK) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The position is affiliated with the Centre for Cyber and Information Security (NTNU CCIS) and its Critical Infrastructures Security and Resilience (CISR) group. The position is part of an ongoing collaboration project between NTNU CCIS and the Norwegian National Security Authority and the researcher will work with other researchers and staff associated with the project.

The research and development will primarily take place in NTNU IIK in Gjøvik, Norway.

The position reports to the Head of Department.

Main duties and responsibilities

The appointment is for a term of two years. There is a great variety of standards, best practices and expert knowledge available on managing information and cyber security risk. This includes information about asset vulnerabilities, their related security threats, how to mitigate those threats, and how to test the efficacy of mitigation. The primary goal of this project will be to conduct research on the collection, organization, management and sharing of this information in order to provide consistent cyber security knowledge that is actionable at different levels.

This work is comprised of a number of tasks. The post doctoral researcher will conduct research on the development of a knowledge base for cyber security risk management that can support a number of existing relevant standards. Tools will be developed that enable querying, reasoning about, and generation of recommendations, based on this security risk knowledge. A further research task will be to investigate and develop techniques that automate the acquisition of security risk knowledge from existing repositories and/or other unstructured/natural language sources. A proof of concept knowledge base will be implemented and validated by using data from selected existing threat repositories and sources.

The research will be carried out as an integrated part of the CISR group, and under the main supervision of Professor Sokratis Katsikas and co-supervised by Associate Professor Basel Katt.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral fellow:

A postdoctoral research fellowship is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. Completion of a Norwegian doctoral degree in Computer Science, Information Security, Communication Technology or equivalent, or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree is required.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

NTNU is committed to following evaluation criteria for research quality according to The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment - DORA.

Other qualifications

  • The position requires excellent written and oral English. The job will include writing, publishing, and presenting of articles and papers in premier English-language publication venues. Applicants who are neither native English speakers nor from Scandinavia, must provide evidence of English language proficiency by means of one of the following tests: TOEFL, Academic IELTS and Cambridge CAE or CPE. Minimum scores are:
    • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
    • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
    • CAE/CPE: grade B or A
  • Knowledge of information security in general and threat management in particular, is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of knowledge representation and reasoning techniques is desirable.
  • Good programming and systems development skills.
  • Documented research experience and publication record.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Ability to obtain Norwegian Defense Security clearance is an advantage.

Personal characteristics

The successful candidate will have excellent problem-solving skills and be comfortable with, and enjoy, applying abstract and mathematical thinking to systems level problems. A team player, the successful candidate should also be capable of working independently and be keen on learning and taking initiatives for personal and team growth.

Salary and conditions

Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 563,700 per year. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 2 years.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
