Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Spatial Genomics: 2 year fixed term.

Established in September 2016 by its foundational head Professor Mark G Macklin, the School of Geography at the University of Lincoln represents one of the “most significant investments in UK university geography for a generation” (Dr Rita Gardner CBE, former director of the Royal Geographical Society). The school currently has 146 undergraduate and postgraduate students, 20 academic, research and support staff, and its first cohort of undergraduates will graduate in September 2020. We are particularly proud of our demographically and internationally diverse academic team, who bring global reach to both their research and teaching, and are soon be joined by a new chair of Human Geography. All faculty are active researchers.

At the heart of the school we have established an interdisciplinary research centre, the Lincoln Centre of Water and Planetary Health (LCWPH), the first of its kind in the UK. Professor Chris J Thomas has recently joined the university as the Global Chair in Water and Planetary Health and co-director of the Centre alongside Professor Macklin. The LCWPH focuses on solving the most pressing global environmental and societal problems emerging from the world’s largest rivers. These include climate change impacts on extreme floods and droughts, flood-related contamination from metal mining and processing, and water-borne diseases affecting humans and animals where riverine environments provide the principle habitat. An emerging area of interest is in environmental flows of antibiotic contaminants and subsequent spatial evolutionary ecology of antimicrobial resistance.

We are seeking a highly creative individual to join the LCWPH team, working with Professors Thomas and Macklin, to help develop field genomics and e-DNA capability in the group and to assist on specific projects underway such as malaria transmission and AMR. You will be technically skilled in relevant leading-edge molecular biology techniques but also be adaptable and interdisciplinary, capable of deploying these in the context of geographic research in multidisciplinary teams. We  believe that new questions and synergies will require new data, so experience in field programmes is essential, including in remote and challenging environments. Candidates must have a recent PhD (awarded) and present a strong track record in research relevant to their career stage, evidenced by conference presentations, publications or manuscripts in advanced preparation.
