Hours: Full time (1.0 FTE)
Term: Permanent

We are seeking to recruit a dynamic and experienced lecturer of physical education and Football coaching and development to join our department. Applications are encouraged from individuals wishing to be part of an ambitious team designing industry relevant programmes and supporting students using contemporary approaches to teaching and learning in H.E. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will be able to draw upon extensive PE teaching and sports coaching experience to enrich teaching and knowledge transfer.

The post is located in the newly formed Department of Psychology and Pedagogic Science which presently houses programmes in PE, Sport and Youth Development (BA), Sports Coaching (FD), Football Education, Development and Coaching (FD & BSc), Sports Coaching Science (BSc), Performance Football Coaching (MSc) and Psychology (BSc). We are looking to develop an innovative portfolio and we have several new programmes undergoing validation for a September 2020 start. We are looking to reinforce St Mary’s reputation as a centre for excellence in PE teaching and sports coaching and we are presently recruiting for an ambitious and experienced member of staff to join our team and extend our expertise.

This role is for a lecturer who will undertake activities primarily associated with teaching on the BA Physical Education, Sport and Youth Development (formerly BA Physical and Sport Education), as well as other sports coaching related foundation and undergraduate level programmes.

We encourage applications from those with recent experience working within a school environment using a wide range of pedagogical content knowledge and subject expertise to develop high quality curriculum design to create meaningful experiences within Physical Education. In addition to being able to contribute to a range of subject areas in PE and sports coaching programmes, we are particularly keen to hear from applicants with a special interest / expertise in any of the following: adapted physical activity; physical activity, health and wellbeing; diversity and inclusion in P.E.; and / or contemporary policy and practice in PE.

You will be expected to convene a range of modules, ensuring their quality against national and University benchmarks, and embedding good practice in inclusivity and diversity within curriculum design and teaching practices. You will be required to provide pastoral support for students and there will be opportunities to lead programme-related activities or represent the programme. You will need to be able to work flexibly as part of a team, play a key role in developing teaching and learning strategies and contribute to academic quality by pursuing excellence in teaching, research and demonstrate a commitment to developing your professional practice. You will be supported in your development towards these CPD objectives. Because of the nature of some of your work, you will need a current DBS.

St Mary’s provides an inspiring and welcoming environment and has a strong, supportive community. The University is proud of the support it gives to its students, and the support is underpinned by the provision of teaching that is student-focused with a strong emphasis on skills and character development. At St Mary’s you will be encouraged to nurture and educate our students, preparing them to be ready to meet the challenges of today and anticipate those of tomorrow.

The Faculty of Sport, Health and Applied Science is an internationally recognised centre with established expertise and resources in sport, health and exercise sciences, pedagogy and psychology. At both undergraduate and postgraduate level, we are committed to offering vocationally relevant programmes of study with the highest academic standards.

There may be some flexibility regarding the role and interested parties are encouraged to contact the Head of Department, Dr Abbe Brady (abbe.brady@stmarys.ac.uk – 0208 240 4218) to discuss this further or PEYSD Programme Director, Andy Stopher (andrew.stopher@stmarys.ac.uk - 0208 240 4296).
