Are you an ambitious researcher looking for a new challenge? Do you have expertise in urban sanitation? Do you want to join an multidisciplinary research team at the University of Leeds?

The University of Leeds has been awarded a grant by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the further development of the Shit flow Diagram Promotion Initiative.  This contract in urban sanitation is intended to support the ongoing development of a database of Shit flow Diagrams (SFD) as part of the final phase of the SFD Promotion Initiative and provide targeted support to the UoL team which has developed tools and online resources.

You will work in a multi-disciplinary international team of staff from six partner institutions: the water@leeds research group of the University of Leeds (UoL); the Water and Sanitation Program of the World Bank (WSP); the Global Sector Program on Sustainable Sanitation of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ GmbH) commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ); the Department of Water and Sanitation in Developing Countries (SANDEC) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (EAWAG); the Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) of Loughborough University, and the Centre for Science and Environment in Delhi (CSE).

You will support the PI and Co-I in several aspects of the work including the development of an offline data collection tool and links to the web portal, and the development of data collection protocols which can link SFD analysis to the generation of national estimates of access to sanitation per the SDG 6.2 targets and indicators.

You will be based at the University of Leeds and be expected to work independently and be available to travel for short periods (of up to 14 days at a time) to carry out field work.

The SFD promotion initiative (Phase 3) is part of a widespread body of work to promote improved planning and delivery of urban sanitation. The project will further develop the service delivery assessment tool and faecal waste flow diagrams (or Shit Flow Diagrams, SFDs) developed by the Water and Sanitation Program of the World Bank (working with consultants and staff from UoL) which clearly and simply show how excreta is or is not contained as it moves along multiple pathways from defecation to disposal or end-use in urban places in the global south.
