The Heterocyclic Chemistry Laboratory (https://koutentisresearchgroup.weebly.com/) accepts applications for a “Special Scientist” position for full-time work on the research project “Synthesis of canthin-4-ones and azepino-fused quinolones” (CANTHIN4ONE). The project will involve the development of versatile and atom economical methods for the synthesis of canthin-4-ones, the construction of a small library of compounds based on canthin-4-ones and their antibacterial screening. For previous related research from our group have a look at: Tetrahedron Lett. 2017, 58, 2661-2664; J. Org. Chem. 2011, 76, 5113-5122; Org. Lett. 2010, 12, 1352-1355.

The project is funded by the program “DIDAKTOR” of the Research and Innovation Foundation (http://www.research.org.cy/).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful applicant will work under the joint supervision of Dr Maria Koyioni (grant awardee – project coordinator) and Prof. Panayiotis A. Koutentis. The majority of the researcher’s time will be devoted on organic synthesis. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to extend his/her skills by being involved in the antibacterial activity screening studies of the synthesized compounds. All the biological studies will be performed under the supervision of Dr Nikolas Dietis at the Laboratory of Experimental Pharmacology (https://www.dietislab.org/) of the Medical School at the University of Cyprus.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BSc (and/or MSc) in Chemistry – ideally the applicant would potentially like to pursue postgraduate studies in this area (MSc/PhD) – or PhD holder.
  • Good command of written and spoken English is required.

RESEARCHER PROFILE:

  • An enthusiastic chemist with genuine interest in organic chemistry and good work ethic that would enjoy working in a synthetic lab.

EMPLOYEMENT TERMS:

The salary and duration of the employment will be dependent on the qualifications of the applicant and will be in the range of €1662 – €2216 (employer cost). From this amount, employee and employer contributions to the various Governmental funds and (GHS) as well as any income tax will be deducted. 13th Salary is not included.
