The Opportunity

The Research Associate will undertake research and development in the area of machine learning and deep learning for entomology images, and develop techniques and tools for detection, recognition and quantification that will contribute to health-related applications.

The role of Research Associate reports to Professor Arcot Sowmya and has no direct reports.

  • Level A: $95,449 - $102,091 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Full time (35 hours per week)
  • Fixed-term contract (24 months) starting in February/March 2020
  • Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia

Selection Criteria

About the successful applicant:

  • PhD (or soon to be awarded) in Computer Science and Engineering or related area or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision in computer vision, machine learning and deep learning.
  • Demonstrated experience with image analysis, software development and evaluation.
  • Expertise in a programming language and tools including:
  • R, Stata, scikit-learn
  • Deep learning tools such as Tensor Flow, Keras, PyTorch
  • Image Processing tools in OpenCV, scikit-image
  • Ability to learn other tools, if necessary
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise undergraduate students or equivalent experience in the supervision of junior staff in related projects.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
