The Program for Evolutionary Dynamics (PED) at Harvard University welcomes applications for a postdoctoral fellow to work in the field of infectious disease modeling with Dr. Alison Hill and Professor Martin Nowak. We are seeking a motivated and creative PhD-level scientist with experience applying mathematics to biological systems.

In particular, we are seeking a postdoc to contribute to two major research efforts related to HIV/AIDS. One is an NIH-funded effort to develop mathematical models to predict the outcomes of new, potentially-curative treatment strategies for HIV infection. Another is a Gates Foundation funded project to use dynamic models to understand outcomes of antiretroviral therapy, including the risks of drug resistance, the influence of patient adherence, and the potential impact of new drug delivery mechanisms. We regularly work with data from experimental collaborators testing new therapies in vitro, in animal models, and in patients.

The successful candidate would also have the option to pursue independent research of mutual interest. More generally, we are interested in factors influencing the pathogenesis and evolution of infectious diseases, both at the individual and population levels.

Our work is conducted in collaboration with researchers at Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California San Francisco, and Johns Hopkins Medical School. PED is an interdisciplinary research institute situated between the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology. Researchers at PED apply mathematical analysis to diverse questions in the life sciences, from basic evolutionary theory and the mechanisms of cooperation in microbial and animal societies to the pathogenesis and treatment of diseases including cancer and HIV. The postdoctoral fellow in this position would benefit from the unique combination of mathematical expertise at PED and experimental and clinical insight from collaborators,

The initial appointment is for 1 year, with annual renewal possible based on performance. Start date of appointment is flexible. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Basic Qualifications

The candidate should have a doctoral degree in applied mathematics, mathematical biology, computational biology, biophysics, population genetics, epidemiology, biostatistics, or related disciplines. A desire to work on applied problems related to HIV/AIDS is required.

Additional Qualifications

The ideal candidate would have experience with all stages of applying mathematical models to biological systems, including generating questions and hypotheses, constructing and analyzing stochastic and deterministic models, programming simulations, analyzing data, and communicating results to researchers in different disciplines. The ability to work independently and initiate new collaborations is highly valued.
