The Department of Global Health and Population at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health seeks to hire a Research Scientist to contribute to a growing and vibrant research program on comparative health systems under the direction of Professor Winnie Yip, faculty director of the Harvard China Health Partnership and the India Health Systems Project.

The successful candidate will develop and execute a research agenda, together with Professor Winnie Yip, on questions relating to differential behavioral responses of public/private providers to health policy interventions; the relative roles of the public/private providers in different health care sectors; and market interactions between the public and private sectors and health policy/system levers in improving the efficiency and quality of health care delivery in both the public and private sectors.

About the Role

The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and rigorous researcher who brings stellar scholarship and leadership to develop a high-quality public-private mixed health care system research portfolio, as well as a passion for using applied research to inform better health policy formulation.

Specific responsibilities include:

  1. Advance the international body of research on pluralistic health systems:
  • Conduct, lead and supervise top-level research on public-private interactions in the health care market, including: developing conceptual frameworks on mixed health systems; generating empirical evidence to understand the relative strengths and weaknesses of the public and private sector, how they compete/interact, how to measure different forms of market competition, and the impact of different market structure and dynamics on quality, efficiency and equity of health care for the people, etc.
  • Seek and develop new opportunities that are synergistic to the project objectives and priorities

       2.Contribute substantially to project-level research in China and possibly India: 

  • Lead/contribute substantially to the design and execution of the research agenda relating to the public-private mix system • Ensure the smooth execution of the research agenda
  • Guide and supervise Boston-based research assistants in relevant areas of expertise.
  • Guide and train local collaborators if needed
  • Write up research results, including co/lead-authoring scientific papers and publishing in leading journals and contributing to project reports
  • Actively engage in dissemination activities and delivering effective presentations for various audiences
  • Travel: Travel in the initial period would be required to establish working relationships with partners in China and can be reduced afterwards

Basic Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in health policy, public policy, economics or health systems research, with strong disciplinary training in social science, especially in the fields of health economics, industrial organization or organizational behavior
  • At least four years of postdoctoral or equivalent research experience in the areas of health policy, health economics, public policy, or health systems
  • Excellent methodological skills especially in methods relevant for the study of market structure and behavior, and organizational behavior
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively to fulfill the objectives and priorities of the project
  • Major contributions to refereed publications beyond thesis papers. Demonstrated record of creative thinking and entrepreneurship
  • Evidence of leadership in scientific administration, including the supervision of research staff
  • Experience in conducting field research in lower and middle income countries
  • Ability to travel and work independently
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and be able to collaborate with and supervise diverse partners

Additional Qualifications

  • Prior experience working in China or India is preferred
  • Familiarity with Chinese language will be reviewed favorably

Special Instructions

  • Appointment as a Research Scientist is normally for three years with potential to renew depending on funding and performance.
  • Appointment as a Research Associate may be possible for appropriate qualified applicants with less experience.
