The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University anticipates a possible opening for a full-time Language Instructor/Teaching Assistant in Japanese expected to begin August 1, 2020 and to extend through June 30, 2021. Language instructors (formerly Drill Instructors) teach small-group sections in Japanese language classes under the supervision of a course head and assist the course head in preparing class materials, grading, and providing individual assistance to students.

Should this opening become available, this will be a term appointment for one year, with the possibility of renewal dependent on performance and curricular need.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates must have native or near-native fluency in all modalities of Japanese (reading, writing, listening, and speaking); a bachelor’s degree or higher; experience teaching Japanese, preferably at the college level to students whose native language is English; and computer literacy.

Special Instructions

Interested candidates should submit:

  1. A cover letter, including a description of teaching experience and philosophy and comments on any efforts to encourage diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
  2. A Curriculum Vitae
  3. Names and contact information of three referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when at least three letters have been received.

Selected candidates will be contacted directly in late February for an interview to be conducted either by Skype, for candidates outside the Boston area, or on the Harvard campus, for candidates within the Boston area.
