The Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), established in 1988, is a globally influential organisation developing leadership and solutions for a sustainable economy. CISL aims to tackle critical global challenges through action research, convening business groups and offering executive and graduate education. As part of the University of Cambridge, CISL has built individual and organisational leadership capacity and capabilities and created industry-leading collaborations to catalyse change and accelerate the path to a sustainable economy for over three decades. The inaugural Director of CISL, Dame Polly Courtice, will be retiring in 2020 – which creates a unique and exciting opportunity to shape the sustainability programme as our new Director.

As Director, you will work strategically to enhance CISL’s external visibility by building on CISL’s global network and strong client base to deliver change and impact, whilst also leading and managing the growth and development of existing and new audiences, ensuring the long-term financial resilience of the Institute and increasing income streams through successful marketing. An additional focus going forward will be on digital and operational transformation and you will need to be able to provide robust oversight as the Institute evolves, developing new systems and physical and digital infrastructure. As Director, you will be the figurehead of the Institute, ensuring that CISL continues to recruit and retain the highest calibre of staff and that the Institute remains an attractive and rewarding place to work.

As a recognised leader in the field, who is already making a substantive contribution to the sustainability debate, you will join us with knowledge of the core areas of CISL’s business, including the challenges of global leadership and sustainable development, and the role of the private and public sectors in delivering a more sustainable economy. Experience of building and leading a dynamic organisation which spans traditional silos, with a proven track record of team leadership, strategic planning and financial management is essential.  You will have substantial experience in international organisations, working at the most senior levels and demonstrating high level negotiation and relationship management skills that are effective within private and public sector organisations as well as with the higher education sector. Strong entrepreneurial and business development skills, with the ability to forge high-level relationships, partnerships and networks globally will be key to your success in this role.
