About the position

We have a vacancy for a PhD candidate at the Department of Computer Science in Gjøvik.

The candidate will participate in the development of courses in software development and digital infrastructure operations taught in NTNU Gjøvik, Trondheim and Ålesund and will develop a framework for combining simulations with computer games as part of a cyber range, to help motivate and engage students in acquiring information security knowledge and skills related to these courses and to improve the understanding, analysis and the application of the security concepts in real world application. The produced games/gaming features will be used in distance education and will be part of the output from the PhD work. The theoretical analysis of the use of games and simulations in an educational context will be used to improve the development and application of games as part of cyber security, software development and digital infrastructure operations education.

Main duties and responsibilities

The successful applicant must

  • Design and develop computer gaming features/games that can be used to support the combination of games and simulations as part of a  cyber range.
  • Participate in integrating the computer gaming features/games into courses in software development and digital infrastructure operations.
  • Conduct empirical data collection through qualitative methods, ideally in combination with quantitative methods.
  •  Be able to analyse such data through theories and concepts from science and technology studies
  •  Complete the obligatory coursework in the PhD program
  •  Produce a PhD thesis, preferably based on peer reviewed articles published in key international journals
  • Present and disseminate work at relevant national and international venues
  • Be an active participant in the day-to-day activities at the department and at the Norwegian Cyber Range

Qualification requirements

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in [subject area] or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation.

Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

Candidates who have completed their master’s degree in an institution where English is not the language of instruction must present one of the following Secure English Language Test (SELT) results as follows:

  • TOEFL Internet-Based (iBT) – minimum 95 with a writing score of at least 24
  •  Academic IELTS – minimum 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each element
  •  Advanced Cambridge Certificate at grade C or better

The test results must not be older than 24 months on the date of the application deadline

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Other qualifications

  • Applicants must have an interest in computer games, and a desire to educate in the area of cyber security.Applicants should have experience in constructing software, games, and/or interactive learning material.
  • It would be beneficial for an applicant to have experience in the information security and cybersecurity industry.
  • It would also be beneficial for an applicant to have worked in education.

We offer

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is three or four years (three years without duty work or four years including 25% required duty work for the department). Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in computer science (https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phcos) As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
