The Global Centre for Environmental Remediation (GCER) is an internationally recognised research and development centre of excellence facility at the University of Newcastle, within the Faculty of Science. The Centre has international research collaborations and research sponsorship spanning Asia, Europe and North America. Through fundamental and applied research with industry and the community, GCER aims to safeguard people's social, economic and physical health and wellbeing by developing innovative, cost-effective and sustainable technologies and solutions that reduce the impact of pollutants on the environment.

About your NEW role

This fixed term (12 month), full-time position will be located at the Callaghan Campus, located on 140 hectares of natural bushland. We have a reputation for having one of the most naturally beautiful campuses in Australia. The campus is 12kms from beautiful beaches, the heart of Newcastle and only 2 hours from Sydney.

Inorganic Analytical role is responsible for the development and implementation of analytical methods for further enhancing the analytical capabilities of the Centre. The role will oversee the working operation and ongoing maintenance of specialised analytical instrumentation, including ICP-OES, ICP-MS, LC-ICP-MS, IC, TOC, Soil C/N/S, Pore Size/Surface Area and Particle Size/Zeta Potential analytical systems for inorganic contaminant analysis.  Reporting to the Lab Manager, responsibilities will include the provision of routine operation, training and guidance to the Centre staff and students utilising analytical equipment. Broad input will be required toward method development of contaminant site assessment, risk characterisation and remediation specific project protocols, and subsequent optimisation and validation analyses.

About you 

You will be conversant with quality assurance and quality control protocols and be responsible for the review of relevant sample preparation methodologies to ensure compliance with instrumentation, and the troubleshooting/resolution of instrument related issues as they arise. In addition to the above you will have:

  • Completed PhD in Chemistry/Analytical Chemistry or equivalent relevant field, with experience in inorganic contaminants analysis.
  • Demonstrated expertise in analytical method development with good experience in post-run data analysis.
  • Sound knowledge and confidence in operation of advanced analytical instruments pertained to inorganic group of analytes.
  • Familiarity to develop and implement QA/QC protocols for the conformity of analytical data. Experience in NATA accredited laboratory is preferable.
  • Ability to work in an equal opportunity and diverse workforce environment in providing analytical services to both student and staff cohorts.

The remuneration is from:

$99,213 (Academic - level B) + 9.5% super and is commensurate with experience.
