The Project
There is great pressure on GPs to effectively manage within the 10-minute consultation time, and this sometimes leads to patient problems being missed, especially when a patient wants to discuss multiple problems. Patients might also be reluctant to share “softer” concerns, such as how worried they are about their health, or whether they are low in mood, or finding it difficult to adhere to their medication or health advice.
The Consultation Open and Close (COAC) Study is an NIHR RfPB-funded study which aims to improve sharing of concerns and problems between patients and GPs, through patients sharing a questionnaire with GPs at the start of the consultation to help to elicit problems that might otherwise have been missed, and the GP providing patients with a printed record at the end of the consultation to help improve recall and adherence.
Programme of work
The study will take place in two phases; an Intervention Development phase and a Feasibility Study phase. The first phase (October 2019 – October 2020) will operate in three GP practices in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire and the second phase in 5 practices (October 2020 – October 2021). The Research Associate will take up post half-way through the first study phase. You will be responsible for interviewing patients GPs and other practice staff members, using a pre-agreed flexible topic guide. You will also conduct qualitative analysis on the data, in collaboration with the Chief Investigator and one of the study co-applicants using a realist approach to inform the study process evaluation.
The Position
The successful applicant will be appointed on an open ended contract. You will be employed at 0.4 FTE (14 hours per week) on Scale I of the Single Salary Spine of the University of Bristol.
