Position Overview

This position will contribute significantly to the discipline of Psychology through leadership in learning and teaching, research, clinical and research supervision and professional/community engagement as detailed in the principal accountabilities.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Preparation and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum which may include subject and course coordination and which provides high quality learning experiences that engage students.
  2. Significant contribution to the profession and leadership within the discipline of psychology including high level administrative functions.
  3. Significant contribution to the development and maintenance of productive and effective disciplinary and interprofessional links with industry and/or the wider community.
  4. Lead and conduct innovative and high impact research and produce high quality publications resulting from that research, and obtain necessary research funding from grants, contracts, and consultancies.
  5. Provide leadership of research teams and/or management of projects, and contribute to building a robust and ambitious research culture within Psychology.
  6. Supervise Higher Degree by Research (HDR), honours and postgraduate students.
  7. Leadership in innovative and effective curriculum design, review and redevelopment which reflects developing best practice nationally and internationally, utilising various methodologies including online and blended learning. 
  8. Provide clinical supervision for students on placement in the postgraduate clinical psychology programs using innovative best-practice methods.
  9. Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.
  10. Demonstrate a commitment to the University values.
  11. Support the principles of the TropEco program and engage in commitment to JCU sustainability goals and objectives.

Generic Accountabilities 

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.

  1. The Associate Professor, Clinical Psychology is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Associate Professor, Clinical Psychology is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance.
  3. The Associate Professor, Clinical Psychology is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

Special Conditions

  • It is a requirement of this position the applicant holds full registration with the Psychology Board of Australia as a psychologist, with endorsement to practice as a clinical psychologist.
  • It is a requirement of this position that the applicant is an approved Psychology Board of Australia supervisor for postgraduate clinical psychology programs.

Selection Criteria

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.

Essential

  1. Completion of a PhD or equivalent qualifications and standing recognised by the University/profession as appropriate for the relevant discipline area.
  2. Registration with Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA), evidenced by current registration in Australia
  3. Registration as a PsyBA-approved Clinical Supervisor
  4. Strong record of research publication, relative to opportunity, with appropriate evidence of quality and impact, and success in obtaining research funding from grants/contracts/consultancies.
  5. Demonstrated leadership in teaching and evidence of excellence in teaching, and a demonstrated capacity in curriculum development at course/program level.
  6. Proven ability to mentor and supervise postgraduate clinical psychology students.
  7. Record of successful research student supervision.
  8. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective communications with colleagues in the academic environment and with people from diverse backgrounds
  9. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team in a co-operative and collegial manner.

Desirable

  • Full membership of the Australian Psychological Society’s College of Clinical Psychologists
