About the opportunity 

The Northern Clinical School is a teaching hospital of the Sydney Medical School (SMS) headquartered at Royal North Shore Hospital.The school coordinates the clinical education of medical students and ensures this is done in accordance with the requirements of the Sydney Medical School.

We are looking to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry to take on responsibility for ensuring that SMS medical students undertaking psychiatry clerkships receive the best possible experience and training. The development of a strong bilateral model of care between the Northern Clinical School and Northern Sydney Local Health District health services for those with mental illness, focusing on mood disorders will be a prime component of the role. In the area of Research this is a key position in the Department of Psychiatry.

This is both a leadership position in teaching and research as well as a critical service role, whereby the successful candidate will take responsibility for overseeing the delivery of all medical student teaching and assessment and related student support within the Discipline of Psychiatry.

  • a medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) and Fellowship of RANZCP (or accredited equivalent)
  • demonstrated teaching and research experience including track record of publications and grants
  • ability to manage multiple stakeholder relationships
  • ability to provide mentoring to students and staff
  • demonstrated high level of clinical skills in psychiatry

The successful candidate will be under the supervision of the Professor of Psychiatry (Professor Gin Malhi) and will be required to participate in and develop new research programs and provide supervision of MD students.

The Northern Clinical School comprises a range of clinical teaching facilities spread over the whole of the northern area of Sydney and beyond. The School is headquartered at the Royal North Shore Hospital, which has provided teaching to undergraduate medical students for over 50 years. We support students in our Doctor of Medicine program and well as practitioners completing postgraduate specialist training. We also assist in the training of nurses and allied health practitioners, in hospital and community settings.
