Brunel University London

Senior Lecturer Grade H5, Full Time, Permanent £54,131 - £59,135 per annum.

Lecturer Grade H3, Full Time, 3 years Fixed Term £38,017 - £49,553 per annum.

NSIRC is an educational establishment offering industry-driven research and postgraduate degree programmes including Structural Integrity and Oil and Gas. Set up to improve the understanding of structural integrity and to address the shortage of structural integrity engineers worldwide, the centre is a unique collaboration led by TWI and Brunel University London together with founder sponsors including BP and the Lloyds Register Foundation.

The main objectives of NSIRC - Brunel are to:

  • carry out fundamental research to address the long-term structural integrity challenges facing the engineering, energy, transportation and marine sectors;
  • deliver postgraduate programmes at Masters and Doctoral level that will train and develop industry-ready engineers and scientists in structural integrity disciplines such as fail-safe design, high fidelity numerical modelling, flaw evaluation and structural health monitoring.

NSIRC – Brunel is a part of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Brunel University London.

About the role

Brunel University London is now looking to recruit an additional member of academic staff to join the existing Brunel team at NSIRC.  The new member of staff is expected to contribute to the research and education primarily in the area of structural integrity at either Senior Lecturer or Lecturer level.

We are seeking applicants ideally with technical expertise/background in one of the following:

  • applied mechanics and continuum mechanics of solids and structures, including development of linear and nonlinear simulation tools for metals and composites undergoing transient loading, including impact and shock loading.
  • mechanical characterisation of materials including damage and failure (for quasi-static, periodic and transient types of loading) which aligns with the latest development of structural materials in energy, aerospace and surface transport.
  • structural reliability with focus on probabilistic modelling, uncertainty quantification and probabilistic integrity and reliability assessment of structures with multiple failure modes to meet the current and future demands of the energy and transport sectors.
  • fatigue and fracture with focus on nonlinear and time dependent fracture mechanics, combined computational and experimental strategies for modelling high cycle fatigue in advanced engineering materials, multiscale computational mechanics and materials design.
  • modelling of multiphase flow in pipelines and flow structure interaction including erosion and internal flow induced vibrations
  • or an appropriately aligned area.

The academic appointment at the Senior Lecturers or Lecturer level will depend on experience of the applicants.  The role will be based primarily at Granta Park, Cambridge and will require travel both in the UK and abroad.

For informal enquiries, please contact:  Professor D J Mynors, Diane.Mynors@brunel.ac.uk, Head of Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Brunel University London.

Closing date for applications: 3 January 2020
