Job description

Pathway: Research

We are looking to appoint an Associate Professor in Financial Services on our Research pathway. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership and line management in relation to the staff and activities within the Financial Services subject group. You will be able to demonstrate a significant contribution to generating external income from research and a sustained record of quality academic outputs and be eligible under the REF 2021 framework. You will also have experience in leading a relevant undergraduate or postgraduate programme.

The successful candidate will join a very successful and ambitious Accounting & Finance group, which has improved 15 places to 45th (out of 102) in the Complete University Guide 2020, and contribute to our recently refreshed suite of postgraduate programmes including MSc International Finance; MSc Financial Technology and MSc Accounting and our BA (Hons) Financial Services degree which is offered in Edinburgh, Hong Kong and mainland China. We are keen to expand our Financial Services provision in response to the significant changes in the financial sector particularly in the areas of financial technology, data analytics, cyber security and artificial intelligence as well as the growing regulatory requirements.

The role

You will join the Accountancy, Finance & Law Subject Group in the School. This ambitious, growing team consists of academics on Research, Professional Practice and Learning and Teaching pathways who make significant contributions across all strands of endeavour. Your contribution on the Research pathway will be in the area of Financial Services / Finance. Your experience might be drawn from the wider Financial Services / Finance & Accounting sectors.

You will be expected to provide leadership to and line manage the Financial Services team and to shape the strategy and development of the Financial Services portfolio of programmes at home and overseas.

You will be responsible for the growth and development of commercial and research activity within the Financial Services Group.

You will be responsible for developing, designing and delivering teaching and student centred learning underpinned by academic research and scholarship, within your assigned areas of responsibility. Some travel will be required as a number of our programmes/modules are delivered internationally. As part of developing an integrated student learning platform you would be expected to contribute to the development of distance learning and on-line learning material.

You will also be required to conduct individual and collaborative research projects, contributing to the research profile within the School, leading to the production of high quality research outputs/outcomes.

You will contribute to the University's objective of growing our academic reputation for research-informed student learning based on industry awareness.

You must be ambitious and enthusiastic about cross-disciplinary working, and be committed to working collaboratively across the University.  You will be required to work independently and as part of a team, supporting others. You will have excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to listen, engage and inspire others.

Who we are looking for

In addition to the role profile the following criteria are essential:

  • A doctoral level qualification in a relevant discipline
  • Evidence of a strong academic research profile alongside a commitment to sustained continuous professional/academic development
  • Sufficient breadth and depth of experience in a financial services specialism to develop high quality teaching/learning and research programmes and have experience of research led teaching 
  • Demonstrable evidence of a teaching specialisation
  • Well-developed leadership and management capabilities
