About the position

At the Department of ICT and Natural Sciences (IIR), there is a vacancy in systems development for smart sustainable cities. The PhD position is linked to the work of Aalesund municipality and to one of the PhD programmes at the NTNU Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. The Department of ICT and Natural Sciences in Ålesund is the employer.

The position reports to the Head of Department.

Main duties and responsibilities

The PhD candidate, among other things, is expected to contribute to the development of systems that supports the development of smart sustainable solutions for the municipality "Nye Aalesund" which is a reality from the 1st of January 2020.

The main purpose of the PhD project is to explore stakeholders’ needs and develop solutions that contribute to the achievement of the UN SDG number 11 and other SDGs found relevant. Please refer to http://sustainabledevelopment.un.org for information. Particularly you will work within the following major areas of systems development:

  • Stakeholder needs and requirements
  • Systems design and implementation
  • Software development
  • Simulation, data visualization and communication

Qualification requirements

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Information Technology or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

Other qualifications:

  • Good knowledge of programming (preferable Python), databases, data visualization, AI, machine learning and optimization algorithms
  • Basic knowledge of UN SDGs for smart sustainable city development, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Standards for Smart Sustainable Cities
  • Insight into conceptual modelling and smart city models and frameworks
  • Good communication skills
  • Profound English skills, both oral and written. Knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is beneficial

Personal characteristics

  • The candidate must be independent, have great work capacity and enthusiasm for research
  • The candidate is expected to contribute to a good research and work environment
  • Personal qualities such as creativity, analytical, and structured reasoning, as well as the ability to carry out projects will be considered in the selection process
  • The candidate is expected to be motivated to work closely with the practice field, i.e. the municipality stakeholders.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation, in terms of the qualification requirements specified in the advertisement

We offer

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, which normally implies a salary at gross NOK 479 600 per year. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years at 100% employment. Duration may be prolonged if employment is reduced due to integrated PhD (part time with master studies) or if combined with teaching employment.

Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to one of the PhD programmes at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. Information about the PhD programs can be found here.

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
