University of Aberdeen

School of Engineering

Research Fellow

REF: ENG146R

The University of Aberdeen, Shell UK and the Oil and Gas Technology Centre (OGTC) are looking to recruit an enthusiastic research fellow with expertise in offshore engineering at the National Decommissioning Centre (NDC).

An exciting opportunity is available at the NDC to be part of a 2-year project partnered by Shell UK Limited. This project focusses on the long-term monitoring of derogated offshore infrastructure in the UKCS and aims to develop a consistent protocol for post decommissioning monitoring.

The successful candidate will be expected to have an in-depth understanding of monitoring strategies that can be applicable to a range of infrastructure systems. The candidate is not expected to design sensors, however a clear understanding of existing sensor technologies and degradation mechanisms of offshore structures would be essential.

The project will involve extensive interactions with industrial stakeholders and regulators, and as such the candidate should be able to comfortably work with experts from different specialities while disseminating the outcomes with high confidence.

Relevant industrial experience in any engineering sector would be beneficial. Further details are given in the ‘Person specification’ section.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6 salary scale (£33,797 - £40,323 per annum) and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.

As this post is funded by Shell UK it is available for a period of 2 years.

Any appointment will be made subject to satisfactory references and a 12 month probation period.
