UCL

Director and Dean, Institute of Education

University College London is one of the world’s leading universities and one of the largest and most complex universities in the UK. Its ethos – that excellence should go hand-in-hand with enriching society – is as strong today as it was at its establishment in 1826. It was the first university in England to welcome students of any religion, the first to welcome women on equal terms with men, and the first to hold both a Silver Athena SWAN award and a Race Equality Charter Bronze Award. It is currently ranked 8th worldwide in the 2020 QS World University Rankings, and performed outstandingly well in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise, becoming the UK’s top-rated university for research strength. It also achieved Silver in the Teaching Excellence Framework.

In December 2014 the Institute of Education formally merged with UCL and became the UCL Institute of Education, it is the largest faculty by student number with over 8,000 students, and 800 staff. The IOE is a world-leading centre for research and teaching in social science and education: rated 1st in the world for education in the QS rankings every year since 2014. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework, the IOE topped the league table for education in terms of research power, with more 4* research than the next five universities combined. It has been recognised by Ofsted for its outstanding teacher training across primary, secondary and post-compulsory provision and plays a major role in influencing the education policy landscape, both in the UK and globally.

Following the appointment of Professor Becky Francis to the post of Chief Executive at the Education Endowment Foundation, UCL now seeks to appoint an exceptional new Director and Dean of the UCL Institute of Education. With first-class intellectual standing and assured ambassadorial skills, s/he will build on the Institute’s unique strengths as one of the world’s leading centres for education and social research. By pursuing effective and imaginative ways of working with internal and external stakeholders and forging impactful, cross-disciplinary partnerships s/he will integrate the Institute’s mission and ethos with the wider aspirations of UCL: ensuring an intellectually rich and culturally diverse learning community that delivers world-class research and provides an outstanding experience for staff and students alike. This is an exceptional opportunity for an exceptionally talented and ambitious leader.
