Job description

In the School of Computing, Electronics and Mathematics we recognise the importance of developing a strong practical insight into the subject area of one's degree, as well as a solid theoretical foundation. This is achieved through an activity led learning approach, where the academic knowledge is cemented by practical real world examples the students can explore on their own and in groups. The school benefits from world class research, through the Faculty Research Centres, which feed into our teaching and provide students with an opportunity to explore cutting edge problems.  

To expand our expertise in teaching and learning we are looking for a Lecturer in Computational Physics. The successful candidate will be able to support teaching across Mathematics and Physics courses at all levels. In particular, we are seeking an individual with experience delivering mathematics provision to first year engineering students. The successful candidate will likely be expected to lead and develop teaching and learning in this area.    

You will be responsible for the development, preparation and delivery of learning, teaching and assessment at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Mathematics and Physics including the use of computational methods and software. You will ensure that the teaching for which you are responsible is informed by contemporary research in the relevant field and develops the ability of students to engage in debate, critical discourse and rational thinking. The ability to teach undergraduate mathematics modules would be desirable.  

You will actively contribute to research, assisting with bids and tenders for external projects or contracts. You will also be disseminating research outputs using a range of media and develop external networks nationally and/or internationally.  

With a PhD and appropriate professional qualification and/or membership, you will need to demonstrate teaching experience at higher education level with evidence of successful student learning outcomes. Experience of working on research projects or contracts, supported by evidence of contribution to appropriate output or experience of professional practice/consultancy will be required.  

You will need to share our passion for delivering a positive student experience that puts excellence in teaching and learning at the heart of everything you do and will be able to demonstrate significant knowledge of your area of specialisation and a willingness to keep your skills up-to-date.   

Successful candidates will be encouraged to become an active member of one of the Faculty

Research Centres (FRCs). As such you will actively contribute to research groups or communities of practice internally and/or externally, assisting with bids and tenders for external projects or contracts. You will also disseminate research outputs and develop external networks nationally and/or internationally.
