Role Description

The National Flying Laboratory Centre is a unique facility based at Cranfield University providing both a 'flying laboratory' for over 1,200 undergraduate and 400 postgraduate engineering students each year and a bespoke research and development service to the aerospace industry.  Currently, the Centre operates four aircraft from the University’s own airport, including two aerobatic light aircraft, which fly nearly 400 Cranfield students per year. Flying operations are typically Monday to Friday, 0900 - 1700. We are seeking to recruit a part-time Management Pilot and Instructor for two days per week, who has significant light aircraft instructor experience.

This is a challenging role which will require you to be self-motivated and highly flexible in your approach, conducting regular flights with students for up to two days a week.  Some previous management experience in an aviation environment is also desirable, with a good understanding of flight mechanics and flight dynamics, as you must be comfortable discussing technical issues with students. Your management experience will be required to organise the light aircraft flying program with a pool of experienced instructors. You must also take responsibility for the associated administration of the light aircraft activity, coordinating the program with the Head of Training and the Head of Flight Ops, ensuring a safe, compliant and efficient operation.

As a minimum, you must hold a valid JAR CPL(A) or Part FCL CPL(A), an unrestricted instructor rating FI(A) and a current medical certificate with no significant limitations. You must have a minimum of 1,000 flying hours of which not less than 500 hours must be as pilot in command and 400 hours as an instructor. An aerobatic instructor rating is also desirable or equivalent military instructor ratings. Recent experience with management in an aviation regulatory environment is also desirable.

This post is subject to a screening process which may delay the start date.
