The Astrophysics Research Institute and School of Natural Sciences and Psychology at Liverpool John Moores University are recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on a project aiming to tackle biodiversity loss in Madagascar.

You will work with other members of staff in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology and the Faculty of Science at Liverpool John Moores University to develop an autonomous, thermally equipped drone system that allows for real-time detection of endangered animal species and underground peat fires. You will train conservation researchers and local conservation teams to operate and maintain the system, and then aid them in deploying the system in Madagascar to help improve the long-term, local conservation and fire-fighting capacity.

A PhD in an engineering discipline, preferably related to robotics, autonomous systems or drones is essential. You should have an understanding of the fundamentals of image processing, object detection and classification and an understanding of basic components of drone systems. Programming and software development experience is essential. Experience in the design, build and operation of advanced drone systems, including autopilots, sensor payloads and autonomous control software is beneficial. You will also have a record of published papers and are able to work in a multidisciplinary team. You should also be willing to travel to remote locations to test the system in the field. You should either be a proficient drone pilot, or be willing to undertake the necessary training as a part of the role. Project management experience would be beneficial.

Informal enquiries may be made to Prof. Steve Longmore (s.n.longmore@ljmu.ac.uk) and Prof. Serge Wich (s.a.wich@ljmu.ac.uk)
