School of Geography

Location:  Lincoln
Competitive salary
Closing Date:   Tuesday 10 December 2019
Interview Date:   Tuesday 21 January 2020

Established in September 2016 by its foundational head Professor Mark G Macklin, the School of Geography at the University of Lincoln represents one of the “most significant investments in UK university geography for a generation” (Dr Rita Gardner CBE, former director of the Royal Geographical Society). The school currently has 146 undergraduate and postgraduate students, 20 academic, research and support staff, and its first cohort of undergraduates will graduate in September 2020. We are particularly proud of our demographically and internationally diverse academic team, who bring global reach to both their research and teaching. We have also established a core interdisciplinary research centre, the Lincoln Centre of Water and Planetary Health, the first of its kind in the UK, and have appointed Professor Chris Thomas (Global Chair in Water and Planetary Health) as co-director. Our interdisciplinary Rural Visions research group, recently formed and led by Dr Gary Bosworth, engages researchers across the University on matters of rural economic and community development, and is contributing to Lincoln’s mission to be a New Civic University.

The next step in the continued growth and development of our ambitious school is the appointment of a visionary Professor of Human Geography who will help lead and shape geography at Lincoln beyond REF 2020. We are looking for a highly creative individual with an innovative and exciting research agenda, who is a team player and has a strong track record in leading, managing and facilitating postgraduate and early career staff. This will be evidenced by a REF 2020 publication and funding portfolio commensurate with this chair-level appointment.

We encourage applicants from all areas of human geography but our preference would be for an authority in migration and/or global development, who can demonstrate a genuine interest in mixed-methods approaches that combine both quantitative and qualitative research practices. This dovetails with our new PGT programmes in Development and Environment, and Water and Planetary Health that will start in September 2020. This new Professor of Human Geography is in addition to three lectureship/senior lectureship appointments the school is making in both human and physical geography in 2019/20 to support our new PGT programmes. The successful applicant will be a member of the search and appoint committee for the lectureship/senior lectureship in human geography to support the Development and Environment PGT programme.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact Professor Mark Macklin, Head of School and co-director of the Lincoln Centre for Water and Planetary Health, to discuss this post.
