About this scholarship

This project will focus on the conceptual and service-based interface between public health and the disability sector. It will explore boundaries that define mental illness, acuity and psychiatric disability and how these boundaries occur on the level of service provision and the lived experience of consumers, families and other carers. The field of study will be the clinical context of emergency department responses to consumers and families who are also receiving NDIS services.

The project will co-produce knowledge and recommended service practices to address the following study questions:

  1. How do emergency care responses relate to the consumers network of NDIS providers in terms on engagement of NDIS providers, coordination of information and support, and involvement in assessment, treatment planning and discharge?
  2. How do consumers and families experience service integration and coordination across emergency care and NDIS service relationships? Are there ‘red-flag’ warning signs that NDIS providers should be alert to prior to clients’ presenting to the emergency department?
  3. What are the barriers of the health/disability interface in mental health and how can these be transcended for improved person-centred care and recovery?
